HyLand approached us about producing a promotional video to show at a festival for Mennonite Central Committee British Columbia (MCC-BC), their owner and benefactor.
They were introduced to us through a feature article that we wrote about Menno Hall, which was a unique and innovative development initiative in Vancouver that involved HyLand and several other partners.
Challenge
As a relatively new company, HyLand had never been the subject of a promotional video before.
They needed a two-minute video to tell their story and explain their uniqueness as a business that was owned by a nonprofit. The task was clear, but the timeline was tight.
Approach
We knew we needed to communicate both HyLand’s passion and their expertise.
We worked closely with their President, Peter Helm, and with Marketing Strategy Manager, Rosa Warketin, to craft a script that moved efficiently from their heart for global development, to their history and purpose, their business acumen, and their vision.

Videography
Two minutes isn’t much room for a company that has to explain what it does, who owns it, and why that matters.
The script gave us an idea of the story and told us what to ask, but the final story emerged from the interviews and what Helm and Warkentin said.
We worked with Colla Films to record video interviews with Helm and Warkentin, and to shoot b-roll at HyLand’s office and at Vara, one of their new developments in Surrey.
From there we edited the video with Colla Films’ assistance. HyLand’s team reviewed the early cuts, and through a few rounds of revisions we found the right balance — enough of MCC’s impact to explain who HyLand is, and enough of the properties and development work to show what they do.
The result was a two-minute video for the event, plus 60- and 30-second cuts in two formats for social media.
Impact
The video was shown at the MCC Festival and effectively promoted HyLand’s unique vision for Local Properties, Global Impact.
Those from both HyLand and MCC who attended the event were proud of the media that was shared and felt it communicated well to others.
We received this encouragement from Rosa Warketin after the event:
“I wanted to let you know that we were very pleased with how this first iteration of our video came together for the MCC Festival. I was at the event on Friday night and saw a great crowd engaged in the video. Great work to you and your team!”
